Camping in Australia? Check nearby mobile towers before you go

By YK Co · Published

Before choosing a campsite, check which mobile networks serve the surrounding area and where their nearby towers are located. It can help you plan for staying in touch, checking weather updates and accessing travel information—but a nearby tower does not guarantee reception at your campsite.

Getting away from everyday distractions is part of camping’s appeal. Still, knowing whether you might have a usable mobile signal is better than discovering you have none when you need to contact someone or retrieve a booking.

Why tower locations matter

Looking at nearby mobile towers gives you useful context about a destination. You can explore which carriers have sites in the area and compare their locations with your planned campsite.

The closest tower is only part of the picture. Hills, surrounding obstacles, your handset and the number of people using the network can affect reception. A busy holiday weekend may also put more demand on nearby infrastructure. The Australian Government explains these factors in its guide to mobile connectivity.

For example, a campsite tucked into a valley may have unreliable reception despite a tower being relatively close. A tower map is a useful planning tool, but it cannot tell you exactly how your phone will perform beside your tent.
